Verhalen

Stories from Wates

Chapter I · Menoreh coffee

From Menoreh to your cup

Our coffee comes from close by: the Menoreh hills of Kulon Progo. Around the Suroloyo peak, arabica grows at around 800–1,000 metres, while robusta is picked in Girimulyo and Samigaluh. Our tasting notes are on their way.

Many coffee shops in Yogyakarta brew beans from outside the region. We chose the hills next door.

Chapter II · Wates

Old Wates

On 20 July 1887 the Staatsspoorwegen opened the Yogyakarta–Cilacap railway, which runs through Wates. In 1951 Kulon Progo (part of the Yogyakarta Sultanate) and Adikarto (part of the Pakualaman principality) were merged into one regency, with Wates as its capital.

Today Kulon Progo is also home to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). Yet houses from the Dutch colonial era still stand — three of them are now our coffee house.
